Alice’s Sourdough Baking Class for Beginners
Enjoy learning to create your very own sourdough bread in a relaxed and friendly environment with full guidance and demonstration, by Alice, along with lunch, welcome breakfast of sourdough toast and afternoon tea. Aimed at those who haven’t done this before, Alice will give you the full explanation, then you get to take home a loaf ready to bake at home the following morning plus several warm, crusty baked loaves too. All sourdough.
Included in your day: You will be creating three different sourdough loaves, hands-on and we will have two of these pre fermented to enable us to “time travel” the dough.
We will be discussing and learning about ingredients, proving, elasticity of the dough, shaping, stretch and fold, temperature and timing, baking, scoring, why we use the flour we use, equipment, adding other exciting ingredients such as seeds, nuts, raisins, herbs or olives, feeling and understanding the difference between proved and not proved dough, the bench scraper and its uses, baking methods, length and temperature of bake, and when it is done. Also, how to create sourdough pizzas or batons and cinnamon buns.... it is an action packed day.
This workshop which runs from 10am until at least 2pm is here for you, and is created to give you the confidence and information you need to go ahead and make your own sourdough bread.
This experience is fun to gift to a loved one, enjoy as a couple, a group of friends, or block book as a corporate day.
We will also set up a WhatsApp group for you if you would like it, during this day, to enable questions and guidance afterwards.
It takes place in Titchmarsh Village Clubroom, only a couple of doors down from the bakery. It is a good space with two fan ovens, and parking, it helps that the environment will be just like a home kitchen so that you can learn to do this in your own home more readily.
What you get:- A take-home bag with a dishwasher-proof proving basket, liner, a jar for sourdough starter for you to make endless loaves of sourdough bread, bench scraper, time & temperature chart, a booklet with 4 recipes and useful information, including full instructions on how to make the bread and feed the starter as well as one not yet baked loaf for you to bake the next day, alongside several baked loaves.
Lunch will be home produced, as with everything here at Alice’s Baking Classes, its all real food, using local, seasonal and home grown ingredients as much as possible, and its additive free, accompanied by a glass of wine, or beer if you like then there will be afternoon cakes and hot drink.
The class will consist of up to 8 people, pairing up for some of the equipment and activity, all of us together in one space. I will demonstrate everything first in any case and also assist and there is no pressure! It is all meant to be fun!
Be prepared to get your hands in the dough... you will be weighing, kneading, lifting and using a razor blade as well as working with a very hot oven, involving handling a hot baking tray and boiling water.
Wear something that you don't mind getting floury and doughy! And be able to roll up your sleeves, and be comfortable.
Meal: There will be choices such as non dairy, plant based options with lunch, and fruit. We hope that we please everybody however if you have any special dietary needs, please bring this along for yourself. Gluten free won't be something that we are able to provide on this day unfortunately, as wheat is going to be all around us at all times.
